They all came! These parents are CRAZY.

It is supposed to be 99 degrees F today. That is going to make for some hot campers, and some hot camp counselors. (The school in which the camp is located does not have air-conditioning.) The only consolation is, hopefully not many campers will come today. I know that I would not send my 5-year-old to five hours of sweltering heat. It's not safe!

Camp has started. It is interesting for several reasons:

- You all know that I did not become a head counselor.
- One of the people who did become a head counselor happens to be one of my friends. Someone who is very nice, but nearly two years younger than me, with three years less camp experience. She’s not a super-counselor - I’d rate her as an average counselor. Therefore, I don’t understand why she got the job instead of me, and I never will. (And in the mean time, I will continue to resent the director. My friend, I have no problem with, it’s not her fault that I’m a sore looser. I’m happy for her.)
- I was moved from the location that I have been at for the past six years, to a new location. Two of the other people who have worked at the same location as me for the past two years were also moved with me. The new director decided it would be a good idea to split up the one power-site (as I like to call it). We had never had any major problems or complaints, while other sites had. Now, we’re all split up. So…everywhere can get its fair share of problems?
- Except for the two counselors who were moved with me, and the two head counselors, the entire staff is new. Which is always a wonderful experience. They don’t know the games or songs, which leaves the majority of the work to the experienced counselors. Usually I don’t mind that. But, in my embittered state, I have to admit to being…bitter.
- We have NO supplies. One of the most important supplies when working at a camp for five-year-old children? Ice-packs. We had no ice-packs today on the first day of camp. If I were a mother and I heard that they had no ice-packs? I would complain. And I don’t plan on being a mother who complains a lot.
- Our bus to the pool had no seat-belts. These kids technically aren’t even supposed to drive without car-seats. I think the most current law is that under 8-years-old, they have to be in a car-seat or booster-seat. And then the bus comes and doesn’t even have seat belts? Ridiculous and dangerous. (Yeah, I know buses didn’t used to have seat-belts. When I was a camper, they definitely didn’t. But they should have then, and they should now.)

Even though I have my complaints, I am very happy that camp started. Despite any issues I may have with certain directors, I love working at this camp, and turned down an offer to collate an education professor’s research data as a summer mentored project.

I’m sure I’ll have more fun stories as the summer wears on.

Like the kid today who insisted, Insisted on wearing a sweatshirt and jeans after swimming (he had come to camp in a t-shirt and his swim-suit), despite the fact that the temperature was in the high 80s F.

Or the fact that we were so behind schedule that instead of actually doing our art project today, we instead did “speed art”. In which we told the kids to just go at it with the supplies on the tables, as fast as the possibly could.
